EuroBLECH 2012 visitor brochure now available

EuroBLECH is the world’s largest exhibition for the sheet metal working industry. The event is renowned as the leading international trade exhibition for this industry sector. With this year’s theme “For a sustainable future”, EuroBLECH 2012 puts a special focus on energy efficient technology, environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and intelligent use of material.

Currently, a total of 1,340 exhibitors from 37 countries have booked their stands at EuroBLECH 2012, covering a net exhibition space of more than 84,000 square metres, which is an increase in floor space of more than 6% compared with the previous show.

“This reflects a further recovery of the sheet metal working industry and a thoroughly positive outlook for this year’s EuroBLECH. The trend, which had already become apparent during the previous exhibition, has now been confirmed: the industry sector is investing again,” explains Nicola Hamann, Exhibition Director EuroBLECH on behalf of the organisers, Mack Brooks Exhibitions.

Visitors to EuroBLECH 2012 can look forward to discovering a large number of machine demonstrations throughout the eight exhibition halls, as live presentation of machines and systems will once again be a major focus for participating companies. The event will occupy halls 11,12,13,14,15,16,17 and 27 at the Hanover Exhibition Grounds. EuroBLECH’s exhibition profile represents the entire sheet metal working technology chain: sheet metal, semi-finished and finished products, handling, separation, forming, flexible sheet metal working, joining, welding and surface treatment, processing of hybrid structures, tools, quality control, CAD/CAM systems and R&D.

Comprehensive information for visitors planning their trip to EuroBLECH 2012, in Hanover, is now available. The visitor brochure includes the key show details, a site map, the exhibition profile as well as useful travel information. The leaflet is available in twelve languages, and can be ordered via the show website.

Skeleton-free processing with TRUMPF - programmed material savings

In skeleton-free processing, the punching press, software and intelligent tooling are all perfectly matched. When punching is complete, the original metal sheet will have simply vanished. That not only boosts process reliability, but material efficiency as well. On average, this achieves a ten per cent improvement - in some cases even as much as 50 per cent.

The basic principle of skeleton-free processing could not be simpler: Common cuts on the sheet for all kinds of part geometry and batch sizes ensure, that no scrap skeleton is left over. The sheet is completely cut up, so that nothing remains on the machine. Residual material and small parts measuring up to 500 x 500mm are rotated if necessary and unloaded directly through the part chute. A sorter separates the good parts from the scrap. Larger workpieces can be removed either manually or by the machine if automated. There is no scrap skeleton in the way.

Adhesive bonding, the new trend in the automotive industry and a speciality of AWL

Vehicles need to be built with ever less weight, and bonding of components is rapidly becoming an important means of joining vehicle parts, with multi-component epoxy adhesives enabling almost any type of surface and material to be joined together. Car body parts, seats, doors, tailgates and bonnets are examples where bonding technology is regularly applied. What is more, bonding permits the use of much thinner steel (0.4mm thickness) than that required for welding or mechanical joining systems; materials such as aluminium or carbon fibres can also be utilised.

Adhesive bonding also offers very high stiffness and good crash properties due to the continuous joint. In fact, as the Dutch manufacturer AWL points out, most adhesives form a bond that is stronger than the bonded materials themselves. Furthermore adhesives have the ability to flex, absorb impacts and distribute load across the entire contact area.

Constructive adhesives supplied by AWL can be divided into single (1K) and two component (2K) types. These are epoxy resins plus a catalyst and when these two substances are combined, a chemical reaction takes place.

Reaction in 1K adhesives requires a temperature of 180°C, which is commonly achieved during the e-coating of the product. In addition 1K epoxies are able to absorb small quantities of oil, so degreasing is not necessary. As adhesive does not cure until heated, it does not harden inside the dispensing equipment.

2K epoxies cure at room temperature, which means an autoclave is not needed. This composition is ideal for parts that require no further production stages. Depending on the characteristic of the load, either a very strong but rigid bond or a more flexible, less strong bond can be chosen. Often bonding is combined with spot welding or clinching in order to allow the adhesive to harden whilst all parts are properly connected.

Adhesive dosage and application equipment are selected in line with specific requirements and in semi- or fully automated processes the application head can also be mounted on a robot. A camera station monitors the correct application of the adhesive.

Two pieces of good news for the British steel market

According to company announcements, two major steps are being taken to increase the UK's steel production capacity.

In the north of England, Sahavyiriya Steel Industries (SSI) is firing up the Redcar steelworks, formerly owned by Corus. This is Europe's second-largest blast furnace and the works employ some 1,600 staff.

In a second development, TATA Steel has announced that the company will be investing £800m (approx. €975m) in its steel plants in Wales "to improve production, product mix, quality and product range" Tata Steel's vice chairman B. Muthuraman was quoted as saying.
