Russia’s demand for machine tools will triple by 2016

According to Germany Trade & Invest (gtai), the foreign trade and inward investment agency of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Russian market for machinery and equipment is highly profitable. By 2016 the demand for metal-working machinery will triple in Russia and reach an annual volume of 2.5 billion Euros. Russian and foreign companies actively invest in modernisation or new construction of production lines in the country.

The big demand from Russia has strongly boosted the export of German machines to Russia in the last year. German companies increased their deliveries to Russia by 7.6%, up to 8.1 billion Euros in 2012. With this result they have managed to build on record results from 2008. The outlook for 2013 is also expected to be a great success. After China, the USA and France, Russia is the fourth largest market for German manufacturers of machinery and equipment. For Germany's machine tool sector it is the third largest market worldwide.

In order to modernise their industry, the Russian government launched the following program in December 2012: ‘Development of industry and improvement of competitive strength by 2020’. With a budget of 500 billion Russian roubles (12.5 billion Euros), Russia aims to advance its industrial branches. For example, metallurgy, automotive manufacture, heavy-duty vehicles as well as the light and chemical industry. Contributing to the high demand of modern equipment in Russia is the upgrading of capacities in the automotive industry and in energy plant engineering. Also rail vehicle manufacturers and Metallurgy Groups invest in new manufacturing facilities.

According to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Samara region, and gtai, the Samara region plays one of the most important roles in the development of Russia’s economy. The Samara region, located directly at the Wolgan River in the south of European Russia and valued as an important hub for the whole Wolgan region, is implementing big industrial projects. The economical driving force is the automotive and aerospace as well as the petroleum and chemical industry. In all of these branches, multi-billion dollar investments are pending in the upcoming years.

The main branches in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Samara/Togliatti are aircraft and automotive production, including the supplier industry as well as mechanical engineering and metal processing. One of the priorities in the development of the industrial complex in the SEZ is the production of cars and car components. Additional investors are going to be acquired with low tax rates and duty exemptions.

Double-digit growth for domestic appliances sector in Southeast Asia

According to GfK, 19.5 million units of major domestic appliances (washing machines, air-conditioners, refrigerators and microwave ovens) were sold across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam in 2012. Close to USD 6 billion worth of sales were generated, representing a 13% volume increase since 2011.

Air-conditioners presented the highest volume growth at nearly 18%. The Philippines and Vietnam are the two fastest growing markets for this appliance, registering more than a 20% surge in demand since last year. A value-growth expanding for washing machines was observed across the region in the range of 9 and 68% in the respective countries. Another contributing segment to the major domestic appliance sector is refrigerators which increased by around 11 and 10% in value and volume respectively.

Southeast Asian consumers are spending more on and buying more small domestic appliances. According to GfK retail audit findings, consumers are buying nearly one million more small household appliances such as food preparation appliances, irons, rice cookers and vacuum cleaners compared to the previous year. European brands are registering a rising presence with one in every three food preparation appliances, vacuum cleaners and irons sold in the region being of continental origin. This has made European manufacturers the dominant contributors to the total sales value in the respective categories.

In Indonesia consumers bought nearly USD 600 million worth of small domestic appliances in 2012. The developing economy of Indonesia is going through an upgrading phase where consumers are switching to newer, better and more expensive technologies, reports the GfK. Households in the world’s fourth largest country by population are buying more of and upgrading their small domestic appliances such as rice cookers, vacuum cleaners, blenders, irons, electric fans etc, contributing to sales of over 24 million units worth USD 595 million in 2012. Findings from GfK Indonesia confirmed the flourishing state of the small domestic appliances market which registered robust double-digit growth for the last three consecutive years.

Special structural steels from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe – various areas of application in the construction of mobile cranes and commercial vehicles

Special structural steels from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe help skyscrapers set new record heights. Take the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, for example: During its construction, stable structures made of N-A-XTRA® and XABO® steels helped transport concrete reliably up to a height of 828 meters. The low weight, high strength and great flexibility of the special structural steels make them the material of choice for construction projects of this kind.

N-A-XTRA® and XABO® from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe’s Heavy Plate business unit guarantee long service lives for highly stressed steel structures. Using special structural steels from ThyssenKrupp, parts for trucks, mobile cranes, pipelines and the mining industry can be made significantly lighter while delivering the same performance. These heavy plates can withstand enormous pressure loads even under extreme temperatures and at dizzying heights. Plate thicknesses of 3 to 100 millimeters allow tailored solutions for every requirement. With very close thickness tolerances of ± 0.2 millimeters and high toughness levels, the materials are ideal for processing methods such as cold forming and welding.

The broad spectrum of N-A-XTRA® (550 to 800) and XABO® (890 to 1100) can be used in bucket excavators, pressure pipelines and container cranes. The highest strength is offered by XABO® 1100. Offering enormous load-bearing capacity yet readily processable, this steel is used for example in telescopic booms for mobile cranes. The high-strength material withstands dynamic loads and allows heavy loads to be maneuvered with pinpoint accuracy. The first applications have also been found for XABO® 1300, which stands for a new generation of high-strength steels at Steel Europe.

PERFORM®: easy-to-process special structural steels for commercial vehicles: The special structural steels from ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe previously marketed under the brand name PAS® are now called PERFORM®. High strength and ready formability remain the main features of this range of steels.

PERFORM® was specially developed for cold forming, so it is ideally suited for reducing weight in the construction of commercial vehicles and mobile cranes, where parts are exposed to high stresses as a result of their own weight, heavy loads and uneven road surfaces. Used in vehicle frames, axle structures, longitudinal and cross beams, and special profiles, PERFORM® steels lower the overall vehicle weight without sacrificing payload capacity.

The cleanness and fine-grain microstructure of PERFORM® give the material a high level of toughness which is essential for cold forming. Thanks to its low carbon and micro-alloying element levels, the steel can be readily welded with minimal susceptibility to cold cracking. In addition, plates of these grades can be cut to length with very close thickness and width tolerances and are suitable for press-braking and bending. The growing network of ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe’s Heavy Plate business unit ensures the materials can be supplied just-in-time around the world. Via its local service centers, ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe offers not only tailored materials but also end-to-end solutions.

Dual flexibility – The new TruMatic 6000 combines fully mature laser and punching technologies

Increased process reliability, perfect part quality, and maximized uptime distinguish the new TRUMPF combined punch laser machine. The TruMatic 6000, a world first, is based on a sophisticated machinery concept and combines the strengths of both laser and punching technologies. That makes it highly flexible and versatile. The laser can cut any desired pattern while the punching head can produce standard contours and forming. With its numerous innovative functions, this system sets new standards in punching and laser processing.

Combined machining at great dependability: One factor in the high process reliability achieved by the TruMatic 6000 is the Smart Punch Monitoring function. It determines whether a hole was actually created and in so doing, recognises potential damage to the punch at an early time. Especially during unmanned night shifts and on weekends, this feature avoids rejects and scrap. TruMatic Assistance Systems boost process reliability even further. A sensor responds if a completed part should unexpectedly fail to slide across the part removal flap. The machine rectifies this unplanned situation itself by vibrating the flap, tapping with the laser guard, and lowering the descending die. It simply shakes off the part and continues the work.

Superior part quality: Unmarred surfaces and clean edges are the measures of the high quality of the parts made by punch laser machines. The TruMatic 6000 offers the right solutions for these needs. Thanks to the descending die, the sheet can be positioned in the machine without it touching the die. This prevents scratches on the sheet's lower surface. The upper surface is kept free of scratches during machining too, since the laser guard has its own NC axis. Thus it can be regulated separately and, for instance, lifted to provide sufficient clearance for raised areas. Part removal flaps can optionally be fitted with brushes to avoid scratches when the part is discharged. This makes the entire processing cycle easy on the material.

Reduced non-productive times: To ensure that the TruMatic 6000 is as productive as possible, the setup and preparation times have been reduced to a minimum. In the laser cutting process, the single cutting head strategy eliminates the need to change out cutting heads. When punching, however, changing tools cannot be entirely eliminated. The new TruMatic does, however, considerably reduce the time needed. Just as in all punching machines and combination machines, the punching head can be rotated, making it possible to turn the tool as required and to use in a number of directions. In addition, TRUMPF joins in its MultiTool system as many as ten punches and dies in a single tool. This also reduces the frequency of tool changes.

When a change is needed however, then it is done quickly. In just 3.2 seconds the punching head replaces the current tool with one from the linear magazine. There are 23 slots available for the medium-sized format with two clamps and 22 positions for large-format units with three clamps. To reduce non-productive time even further, the machine can be automated using a SheetMaster. Where customers have to produce many different parts, the new integrated tool changer is an interesting option. With its help, the system can store forty additional tools and automatically change them out.

Pivatic’s solution for precision punching and bending, tailored to customer requirements

To solve customers’ needs, Pivatic has designed an effective solution to perforate ceiling tiles straight from coil. PivaPunch solution combines three processes in one machine: press tooling for perforation, a flexible CNC punch press and a post leveling process.

The CNC punching station, which uses Thick Turret tooling, punches holes and special patterns and notches corners. Perforation press and tooling uses quick-change adapter or attachment plates. The solution combines standard tooling, dedicated tooling and the customer's special requirements.

Both coil-to-coil and coil-to-blanks processes are in the same setup. Punched blanks need to be stacked for further processing, and perforated coils used for other lines. The processing time of PivaPunch is exceptionally brief, with a flexible perforating line working with the same speed as conventional press lines. The solution saves both floor space and manpower, as a single person can operate it.

Punched parts, made straight from coil with minimum handling, create a leap in productivity for both small and large manufacturers. It fits between turret punch presses and press lines combining flexibility and efficiency. The PivaPunch Punching Center for Coils includes a programmable Punching Station using Thick Turret type tooling set in Quick-Change Tool Cassettes capable of punching, nibbling, embossing, making of lances, louvers, etc. PivaPunch offering covers strip widths from 60mm to 1,525mm in two sheet thickness ranges.

Victor® Thermal Dynamics® - From Mild Steel to Bolt-Ready Holes

Victor® Thermal Dynamics® introduces Diameter PRO™ Technology: Consistently producing quality holes with an automated plasma cutting system can be a big challenge for fabricators. The finished quality of the cut is not only dependent on the quality of the individual components in the system (power source, plasma torch, CNC controller, height controller and cutting table) but also on these components being properly integrated, ensuring precise control of all variables in the cutting process.

The best results can be obtained with a fully integrated system that allows the CNC controller to intelligently control the capabilities of an advanced High Precision power source, such as a Victor Thermal Dynamics Ultra-Cut® system.

Victor Thermal Dynamics has developed Diameter PRO technology, which facilitates this integration of components allowing High Precision plasma systems to cut bolt-ready holes with minimum-to-no-taper. As soon as the holes are cut, the work piece is ready for finishing or assembly, saving time and money by eliminating secondary processes and thereby increasing productivity. This is the ideal process for cutting holes in mild steel from a 1:1 or greater diameter-to-thickness ratio on thicknesses from 3 to 50mm.

Diameter PRO has the capability to automatically adjust an infinite variety of settings – anything from cut speeds and torch heights to arc voltages and cut diameter. It is compatible with virtually any existing nesting software. Diameter PRO is a software solution integrated into Victor Thermal Dynamics iCNC™ XT controllers and allows Ultra-cut systems to cut high quality “optimized” holes by simply clicking a button in the CNC software. The integrated height control works seamlessly with the integrated drive system to control machine motion and cut high quality holes every time.

Diameter PRO technology is also available when using Victor Thermal Dynamics High Precision systems with other CNC systems, through a parameter database that can be installed in virtually any CNC system, allowing them the same precise control of the plasma power source as the iCNC XT.
