Sheet Metal Working Industry Keeps Focus on International Business


From 21-25 October 2014 the international sheet metal working industry will meet again for its leading industry fair EuroBLECH 2014 in Hanover, Germany. A total of 1,411 exhibitors from 41 countries have to-date booked their stands, covering 86,500 m2 of net floor space across eight halls of the Hanover Exhibition Centre. This represents a 3% increase in exhibition space compared to the previous show.

New packaging press from Schuler produces 3,000 beverage can lids per minute


An Asian manufacturer has placed an order with Schuler for a press to produce beverage can lids. The Smartline SA-S can produce over 3,000 such lids per minute. The Smartline not only forms the can’s stay-on tab but also attaches it to the lid and forms the depressed panel with opening score.

SSAB high strength steels and wear plates meet all demands for laser cutting

High Strength Steel (HSS) and Wear Plate offer significant advantages over mild steels. However, when it comes to laser cutting, they behave exactly the same way. Both Hardox and Domex, from SSAB, meet all demands for laser cutting and can be processed with the same cutting parameters as unalloyed steel grades such as S235.

Sheet Metal Working Industry Keeps Focus on International Business

From 21-25 October 2014 the international sheet metal working industry will meet again for its leading industry fair EuroBLECH 2014 in Hanover, Germany. A total of 1,411 exhibitors from 41 countries have to-date booked their stands, covering 86,500 m2 of net floor space across eight halls of the Hanover Exhibition Centre. This represents a 3% increase in exhibition space compared to the previous show.

Major exhibitor countries next to Germany are Italy, China, Turkey, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Austria and the USA. Half of all exhibiting companies come from outside Germany. This high percentage of international exhibitors once again confirms EuroBLECH’s position as the world’s No 1 exhibition for the sheet metal working industry. New packaging press from Schuler produces 3,000 beverage can lids per minute

An Asian manufacturer has placed an order with Schuler for a press to produce beverage can lids. The Smartline SA-S can produce over 3,000 such lids per minute. The Smartline not only forms the can’s stay-on tab but also attaches it to the lid and forms the depressed panel with opening score.

This process is made possible by a special die supplied by the Japanese company Showa Machine-tool Co. Ltd. which combines the two steps. In addition to the pre-formed lid blanks, a metal strip is fed into the die to form the tabs. Four lids are produced simultaneously with every stroke. Schuler collaborated closely with Showa on the development of the overall system.

For an energy-efficient production of beverage can lids with few rejects, the Smartline SA-S provides a controlled AC drive with energy recovery as well as a temperature control of the body, an extremely fast switching clutch and brake as well as a depth penetration control. The Quick Lift feature allows the user to resolve outages as quickly as possible.

The Smartline SA-S has so far been used for the punch-bundling of electric motor laminations – a similarly complex technical process. With a press force of 1,250 kilonewtons and a maximum speed of 850 strokes per minute, the machine will begin producing beverage can lids at the Asian manufacturer’s facility in early 2015.

SSAB high strength steels and wear plates meet all demands for laser cutting

High Strength Steel (HSS) and Wear Plate offer significant advantages over mild steels. However, when it comes to laser cutting, they behave exactly the same way. Both Hardox and Domex, from SSAB, meet all demands for laser cutting and can be processed with the same cutting parameters as unalloyed steel grades such as S235.

SSAB does not require to have special laser steel grades. All Hardox and Domex steels can be perfectly laser cut because of their consistent steel properties, low thickness tolerances, outstanding flatness and surface finish, as well as low alloy and optimized chemical composition. The high steel quality also allows for smaller radii and ensures accurate results when bending.

They permit the accurate, rapid separation of components even when they are already assembled with additional components or are going to be assembled. And the excellent development work effectively implements all performance-enhancing functions.

High output in complex production very often requires intelligently tuned handling systems that are fast and can ensured that pipe processing machines next to each other can be operated simultaneously. To ensure the ideal utilization of the processing machines in the production cell, transfluid relies on the newly developed servoelectrically controlled 4-axis handling system. It reliably meets all handling requirements, even with bent pipe. Pipe lengths between 30 and 3,000 mm can be processed at top speed. Because the usual handling time of a robot, at approx. 8 seconds, can usually be beat by half with this system.

The different characteristics of systems also make combination a practical option, depending on the production task. Then the 4-axis handling system and robot after bending can work hand in hand for additional handling tasks. The control of both systems can of course be coordinated. Gripper changes are already optimized in both systems. To do this, transfluid developed special interior and exterior grippers that cover a wide spectrum of production requirements. Rotating and turning mechanisms round out the automation line for complex requirements.

Hypertherm expands torch line-up with new Hyamp torches

Hypertherm, a manufacturer of plasma, laser and waterjet cutting systems is expanding its industry leading line-up of Powermax air plasma torches with the introduction of Duramax Hyamp torches. The new offerings include “long” torches for extended reach cutting and a number of robotic torches.

The long torches, designed for hand-held cutting, come in two different lengths — 0.6 meter and 1.2 meter — and two different torch head angles — 45 and 90 degrees. The torches are ideal for scrapping, skeleton cutting, overhead cutting and more, enabling operators to complete jobs more quickly and ergonomically without bending down or climbing ladders. The Duramax Hyamp Robotic torches, which provide lower cost robotic cutting solutions, are available with three different head angles — 45, 90 and 180 degrees.

All of the Duramax Hyamp special application torches are made from high impact, heat-resistant materials to withstand the harshest industrial environments. The torches are compatible with the Powermax125, as well as the Powermax105, Powermax85 and Powermax65 plasma cutting and gouging systems and feature Hypertherm’s patented FastConnect™ technology to make switching between torches easy.

With the BIMERIC SP servo system, Bihler presents users with new perspectives in the progressive manufacture of assemblies at EuroBLECH 2014. The unique machine combination of SP 500 servo press and BIMERIC platform now solves the problem of sequential assembly production with progressive equipment.

Often manufacturers have to transport the parts stamped in the highly productive press manually for further processing. In subsequent processes, these components are then assembled on other systems. All this requires a large logistics effort and generates quality losses and additional costs. Precision assemblies provide an even greater logistical challenge. Productivity in fully automated manufacturing is therefore heavily influenced by "logistics factors".

With its integrated component handling, the BIMERIC SP offers significant advantages compared to sequential production processes. The stamping and forming parts produced in the SP 500 servo press in progressive dies are further processed by the BIMERIC platform directly on the carrier strip and assembled to finished assemblies without any intermediate logistical operations.

Processes such as contact welding, thread forming, adding screws, etc. can simply be outsourced from the press. The continuous component handling streamlines and simplifies the process chain, ensures a consistently high quality of manufactured components and saves logistics costs as well as downstream machinery.

KMT Waterjet Systems: New model of ABRALINE IV

For many years now, KMT Waterjet has been offering the abrasive bulk transfer system ABRALINE. After the successful introduction of the high performance version of this system – the model ABRALINE IV Advanced – KMT now presents an enhanced model of the smaller version – the model ABRALINE IV Comfort. This product features the same high quality design as its bigger sibling thus being suited as a cost-saving alternative for those machine operators, whose waterjet cutting machines do not run continuously.

When cutting with a waterjet, the exact monitoring of all relevant parameters is the precondition for the efficient and reliable operation of the complete system. To make this easier, KMT has developed the abrasive bulk transfer system ABRALINE which ensures the proper abrasive flow to the cutting heads at any time. Therefore, machine operators using the ABRALINE can avoid quality issues with the cut results and save time and costs.

The newly developed model ABRALINE IV Comfort has some advantages compared to its predecessor – the ABRALINE III. All key components are manufactured in Germany and feature a high level of quality. From the robust frame with proper bends and weldings, to the reliable electronics assembly, to the pressure vessel, which has been designed following the requirements of the pressure equipment directive, every component has been constructed to provide a long product life and easy usability.

Especially the pneumatic pinch valve connecting the abrasive silo and the pressure vessel constitutes an improvement compared to the cone seal used in the previous model. As with the bigger model ABRALINE IV Advanced, the pinch valve ensures long lifetimes even at continuous operation. It is characterized by a free production flow, minimum friction resistance and the absence of leaks and clogging.

Goudsmit Magnetic Systems: Magnet gripper with pad for vertical grip on sheeting

Goudsmit Magnetic Systems in Waalre launches an innovative new design of the magnet gripper at EuroBLECH 2014.

This is used for lifting and gripping amongst others pressed steel sections, blanks and perforated steel sheets. The magnet gripper is fitted with a rubber pad; this is a modification to the existing design where moving the work piece during vertical lifting posed a problem. An additional benefit of the revised version is that the work piece does not become damaged; the gripper is wear-resistant and has a longer life expectancy.

The magnet can be implemented in grippers on robot arms; magnetism replaces the conventional vacuum technology here. Using air, the magnets can be switched on and off. This way, the system can also simply lift and transport extremely thin steel sheets one by one.

Sensitive robotic assembly: KUKA “Knight” concept in the production of electric motors at Siemens

In order to boost productivity in its Bad Neustadt factory for electric motors, Siemens AG will be relying on the process expertise of KUKA Systems GmbH in the future. The automation specialist for joining and forming technology and sensitive assembly processes is delivering a robot-based handling and inspection cell for the precise execution of five work steps using human-robot collaboration:

loading the blanks, removing them after machining in a CNC center, cleaning the workpieces and inspecting their dimensional accuracy. Upon completion of these production steps, the parts are set down in their corresponding transport containers and made available for further processing.

The core component of the station is the “LBR iiwa Knight” mobile robot concept, a standardized solution in sensitive robotic assembly. As part of customer projects and development cooperations, KUKA Systems has established an engineering process in which leaner and more flexible robot cells can be used to implement simple and complex processes while taking HRC features into account.

In addition to the many advantages of this type of flexible robot cell, such as the reduction or elimination of installed complex external sensor systems and the use of LBR iiwa capabilities such as force and torque sensors, the main focus is on mobile robotics with HRC. With this, KUKA Systems shows that the LBR iiwa can also optimally support production as a helper and roving multitasker during workload peaks and resource bottlenecks – so-called ‘spontaneous’ automation.

Rösler Long Life Rutten turbines: Energy savings of up to 25%

With rising energy costs manufacturing companies increasingly focus on installing energy saving equipment. Certainly a reason, why so many shot blast machines are equipped with Rösler Long Life blast turbines. Shot blast machines use a lot of energy. Therefore, it is not surprising that numerous customers are switching to the energy efficient Rösler Long Life Rutten turbines with curved-C and Gamma-Y throwing blades, especially when machines are running in multiple shifts. These high performance turbines offer a considerably higher efficiency than other turbines in the market. The special blade design allows a highly fluid, unobstructed media flow.

Compared to conventional blast wheels the optimized media accelerating system produces a higher media flow and higher media throwing speeds. This allows the use of drive motors with lower power input resulting in less energy usage; without giving up any of the performance characteristics. With the achieved operational cost savings the higher investment expenditures for Long Life blast turbines in new shot blast machines are often amortized on average within two years. Moreover, the higher throwing speeds of a lesser volume of media improve the overall shot blast results and in shorter cycle times.

New start/stop technology in AP&T's presses

AP&T is introducing new energy-saving technology in its hydraulic presses. The system is called "Frequency Drive System”, and is similar to the start/stop function found in modern vehicles.

AP&T has been testing the new system both in the simulated testing environment and under actual operating conditions with customers. The system controls the speed of the electrical engines, which then control the load-sensing hydraulic system found in AP&T's presses. This means the system can quickly reduce the speed of the electrical engines as well as quickly start them. The principle is similar to the start/stop system found in some modern passenger cars.

The test results are positive. Since utilization of the electrical engines is optimized to when they are really needed, it is possible to save up to 40 percent of the energy costs for the press. The amount that can be saved primarily depends on the customer's electricity contract.

Pulsed TIG welding controls assist stainless steel fabricators and those working thin metals or other heat-sensitive applications to reduce heat input, narrow the weld bead profile and increase travel speed. A slow frequency, such as 1 PPS, acts as a “metronome” so that beginners can establish a good cadence for adding filler rod.

The AC/DC systems are perfectly suited to aluminium welding with the new Modulated AC System (MACS) producing an ideal AC arc, whilst Perfect Cleaning Action gives optimum aluminium welding conditions for thicknesses from 1mm.

All of the Tweco Arcmaster systems provide advanced Stick welding controls, including automatic Hot Start, adjustable Stick Arc Force control and electrode anti-stick system. These features allow end users to adjust arc characteristics to optimize performance for different electrodes and help prevent the electrode from sticking.
