TEKA: New double module unit running in permanent operation


The extraction and filter unit FILTERCUBE of TEKA is available in a new double module unit version meeting the demands of high and continuous pollutant outputs during welding, grinding and cutting operations. The unit precisely takes in fumes and dust and purifies the air to more than 99.9 per cent (filter of the dust category M with a transmittance of <0.1 per cent according to DIN EN 60335-2-69). It is available as a low-, mid- and high vacuum system and is, in total, equipped with eight cartridges.

Crossbar Robot 4.0: Schuler unveils the new generation of press automation


Schuler’s Crossbar Robots are used to transfer parts from one stage of a press line to the next: they can remove up to four parts at a time from the die, change their orientation where necessary, and place them directly into the next die. The new pipe bending/ forming system from transfluid for tight pipe coils


Wherever boilers let warm water flow or heat exchangers do their energy-efficient work, pipe coils are needed as system components. But before the coiled pipes are ready to use, the outlets have to be machined, precisely and with no loss of cross-sectional area. EuroBLECH 2014 – The Technological Showcase for the Sheet Metal Working Industry

BLECH Russia returns to St Petersburg

The fourth edition of BLECH Russia, Sheet Metal Working Exhibition, will take place from 24 to 26 March 2015 at its new venue, the ExpoForum in St Petersburg.

BLECH Russia 2015 is, once again, targeted to Russia’s strong sheet metal working industry. The exhibition covers all core sectors of the sheet metal working technology chain, including sheet metal, finished and semi-finished products, forming, separation and joining technology, flexible sheet metal working, machine elements, automation and robotics, handling, surface treatment and CAD/CAM systems as well as R&D.

With 127 exhibitors from 18 countries and more than 4,300 visitors, the previous event, held in March 2013, was a thorough success. A great majority of the Russian as well as the international exhibitors at the show confirmed that they had achieved their aims.

St Petersburg is a key production centre of Russia’s automotive industry. International companies present in the region of St Petersburg are Toyota, General Motors, Nissan, Suzuki, Hyundai, Ford, Scania, MAN and Magna. The region’s production output for new cars is scheduled to reach over one million vehicles annually by 2018. Next to the automotive industry, local manufacturing traditionally focuses on shipbuilding, and today also includes industry sectors such as optical technologies, IT, electronics and sheet metal working.

The German Association Materials Management, Purchasing and Logistics (BME) is once again organising a special purchasing conference at the Convention Center (CC, Room 12) within the Exhibition Grounds on Wednesday, 22 October between 1pm and 3pm.

The conference focuses on the latest best practice examples concerning industrial procurement, e.g. key performance indicators, steel and energy procurement as well as logistical supplier management.

The event is free and open for buyers, exhibitors and trade visitors. For planning purposes, attendees are requested to register in advance. The conference language is German.

Competition “Champions in Sheet Metal Working”

For the first time, EuroBLECH is presenting ‘Champions in Sheet Metal Working’, an online competition to recognise outstanding examples of high standards, best practice, innovation and excellence in sheet metal working.

The competition will have five winners in total, one winner for each of the five main categories:

TEKA: New double module unit running in permanent operation

The extraction and filter unit FILTERCUBE of TEKA is available in a new double module unit version meeting the demands of high and continuous pollutant outputs during welding, grinding and cutting operations. The unit precisely takes in fumes and dust and purifies the air to more than 99.9 per cent (filter of the dust category M with a transmittance of <0.1 per cent according to DIN EN 60335-2-69). It is available as a low-, mid- and high vacuum system and is, in total, equipped with eight cartridges.

Thanks to its binary action, the unit can, in contrast to traditional systems which have to be stopped during maintenance work, run in permanent operation. While one filter module is disconnected during the automatic cleaning, filter change or the discharge of dust, the other one keeps operating at the same pace. The production never has to stop.

The modules offer a new user-friendly and safe dust disposal system. Through the unfastening of a chucking lever the barrel in which the dust is collected can be taken out and be sealed with a lid. This way the operator never gets in contact with hazardous substances.

A unit of the FILTERCUBE series can be seen at the TEKA stand E20 in hall 13 at EuroBLECH in Hannover.

Crossbar Robot 4.0: Schuler unveils the new generation of press automation

Schuler’s Crossbar Robots are used to transfer parts from one stage of a press line to the next: they can remove up to four parts at a time from the die, change their orientation where necessary, and place them directly into the next die. Under the motto “Connect for success!” Schuler today unveiled the fourth generation – the Crossbar Robot 4.0 – at its facility in Gemmingen, Germany.

Besides its revolutionary and functional design, the most striking development is probably the robot’s improved performance: According to Schuler Managing Director Lothar Fischer the Crossbar Robot 4.0 can convey up to 15 parts per minute and is thus faster than ever. Together with the Crossbar Feeder for the automation of servo press lines, Schuler is setting new standards in terms of speed, says Fischer. The easy-to-program Crossbar Robot is ideal for automating conventional mechanical and hydraulic press lines – also for loading and unloading – as well as for retrofitting existing lines.

A modified drive system with two motors and new transmission has significantly boosted the Crossbar Robot’s speed – and halved its weight: making the “artificial arm” some 20 percent more dynamic. The maximum load (including tooling), however, has remained unchanged at 90 kilograms. Thanks to an innovative energy management system with integrated energy recovery, the robot’s energy efficiency has also improved by 20 percent.

As the Crossbar Robot is mounted overhead on a track suspended from the ceiling, it can cover distances between presses of up to ten meters. Such large gaps are typical for older lines which need space for an intermediate station – something not required by the Crossbar Robot as it can change the part’s orientation either in the air or in the die. According to Lothar Fischer this not only replaces two former devices and increases the space for maintenance in the press gap, but also significantly increases the line’s output performance.

The Crossbar Robot is based on a six-axis industrial robot, to which Schuler’s engineers have added a further two axes. These represent the hand of the robot arm and the horizontal drive, thus greatly increasing maneuverability, flexibility and output. And thanks to its process data interface, the new Crossbar Robot is already well prepared for the Industry 4.0 era. Its intelligent networking capabilities turn it into an analysis tool which can monitor processes and report any errors which may occur. The Crossbar Robot 4.0 therefore plays a decisive role in securing high and consistent productivity – forming an ideal bridge into the future for press lines.

But before the coiled pipes are ready to use, the outlets have to be machined, precisely and with no loss of cross-sectional area. For this challenge, the solution finders at transfluid Maschinenbau GmbH put their right-hand/left-hand bending machines to use in a specially developed system.

The coiled material is first placed into a measuring device by a robot. Here, the exact diameter and length of the pipe coil is entered that define the orientation and position of the outlets.

Then the machine positions the component in accordance with the measured data and bends the pipe ends with an impressive ovality of less than 5 percent.

The outlets are precisely positioned and can be installed directly in the boiler.

After bending, the pipe coil is moved into a fully automated processing system. This system cuts the pipe ends without burrs, and axially forms a cone. A frontal sealing surface for flat-sealing elements is also attached as a conical thread cut. This combination makes it possible for the customer for this special transfluid system to seal both frontally and on the threads.

Another decisive advantage of this advanced process: The processing of extremely thin-walled pipe is supported, and all processes are completed without burrs. That ensures clean fabrication and optimum efficiency in the production process.

STOPA order-picking tower pre-sorts metal sheets

STOPA has developed an order-picking tower which can pick sheet metal stacks in any combination during machine time for one-off production, resulting in greater productivity.

The solution consists of a suction crosspiece which moves on the outside of the order-picking tower integrated into the sheet metal storage system. A storage and retrieval unit transfers the pallets of blank sheets to the tower as requested by the programmable controller. The suction crosspiece fetches individual sheets from their tower shelf locations, pre-sorts them for one-off production and places them on an order-picking pallet. In doing so, it achieves lifting speeds of 60 m/min and telescoping speeds of 90 m/min, meaning that it takes 20 to 30 seconds to pick one sheet. The acceleration is 1.5 m/s² in each case, according to the manufacturer, STOPA Anlagenbau GmbH of Achern-Gamshurst. The tower prevents simultaneous lifting of two sheets by means of a double sheet detector with a highly accurate weighing unit that also indicates the weight.

By enabling order picking of sheet metal stacks in any required combination during the machine time, the system makes one-off production much more cost-efficient. Switch cabinets are one example: laser cutting or stamping, and further machining of their components, can be carried out all in one job. Moreover, there is no need to reserve storage space for semi-finished parts, nor for manual order picking. This boosts productivity as well.

The only limitations on combining different types of sheet metal are the number of shelves for order-picking and blank sheets, and the fact that the suction crosspiece is not designed for lifting sheets with large overhangs at the edges.

In its standard configuration, the STOPA order-picking tower has two order-picking pallets and five pallets for blank sheets. It is compatible with sheet thicknesses from 0.5 to 8 mm. The standard storage height for seven pallets is 4.6 m, and the maximum height is 8 m. At its maximum height, the tower weights seven tonnes overall, and the empty weight of the crosspiece, which telescopes by 1810 mm, is 1.5 tonnes.

STOPA also didn’t forget convenience and safety. The lifting motor, for example, is located in the lower part of the crosspiece where it is easily accessible to service employees. A net below the crosspiece provides protection against falling sheets, and a fall preventer for the counterweights ensures safety during maintenance work.

The tower's programmable controller communicates with the higher-level storage management system, from which it receives picking orders. The operator also has a separate user interface. The order-picking tower can be retrofitted to existing systems at any time because it operates autonomously.

STOPA will be presenting its order-picking tower in Hall 11, Stand A38 at EuroBLECH in Hanover. The tower will be connected to a STOPA COMPACT II automatic storage system. Visitors to the stand will also have the opportunity to see other innovations.

Siempelkamp: Innovative concept for the hot forming of press-hardened components for the automobile industry

At EuroBLECH 2014 in Hannover, Germany, Siempelkamp will present its innovative concept for the hot forming of press-hardened components. As a turnkey provider, the Krefeld mechanical engineering company supplies complete press lines including the required automation technology as well as process monitoring. According to the material flow and space conditions, the press line can be adapted to the customer‘s requirements.

The heart of a press line is Siempelkamp‘s innovative hydraulic press. Based on an analysis of the process requirements, a new machine concept was developed for the hot forming of press-hardened components. The homogeneous pressure distribution ensures higher quality and an increased output quantity of press-hardened parts. Furthermore, the press concept is characterized by increased process reliability and low tooling costs. Customers save money with the cost-efficient hydraulic drive system which was specially tailored to the press-hardening process.

From the blank loader, to the feeding of the furnace, to the automation of the downstream processes, press lines are fully automated. Furthermore, the Siempelkamp subsidiary Strothmann – a market-leading company for material handling systems based on linear axes technology with more than 60 installed automation systems for hot forming facilities, supplies the complete component handling system.

Siempelkamp also provides the suitable machine technology for other plate forming processes: Siempelkamp side member presses can be designed as a single-purpose press for the production of side members, multipurpose press for the manufacture of side members, cross members, bumpers and cabin parts or as a universal member press. Our presses incorporate the complete material handling system and increase production outputs through long tool life. Furthermore, these presses provide excellent automatic ram parallelism control during high eccentric loads as well as optimal shock-absorbing properties during blanking.

Siempelkamp‘s heavy plate blanking presses allow the synchronized forming of plates with a thickness range between 2.5 and 12 mm. They are suited for the production of high-quality chassis, auto body parts and add-on parts for commercial vehicles such as cross members, gusset plates and reinforcements. Combined with our flexible and high-performing material handling systems made by Strothmann, these presses offer the perfect solution for the manufacture of high-quality automobile parts. Siempelkamp’s heavy plate blanking presses are equipped with inclined position monitoring, an eightfold moving beam guiding system, a tool clamping system, and infinitely variable ram locking. The belt conveyor is integrated into the press control. Efficient drive systems ensure short cycle times. Furthermore, these press systems are equipped with hydraulic blanking stroke limitation with active cutting impact dampening.

AP&T is opening new center for R&D in Ulricehamn, Sweden

AP&T is now opening a center for research and development at its newly constructed facility in Ulricehamn, Sweden.
According to Per Josefsson, Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing, AP&T, the company will have entirely new opportunities to further develop today's technology and test solutions for the future.

The new center will be used to develop, test and demonstrate tools, presses, automation equipment and control systems. It will also be possible to test different methods for finishing work, for example laser cutting of both blanks and finished products. AP&T's customers will also be able to lease the center to perform their own testing.

The heart of AP&T's R&D Center is a complete production line for press hardening. The line includes a 1200 metric ton press (1350 US tons), AP&T's own furnace with feeding equipment (Multilayer Feeder Furnace) and additional automation. Some of the current projects involve testing tools for several customers in the automotive industry (OEM and Tier 1), for example.

Previously, final testing was performed at the customer's premises, but now AP&T will be able to complete all of the tests prior to delivery. This will cut down on start-up time considerably according to Per Josefsson.

With its own in-house production line, AP&T can also manufacture prototypes and pre-production series for its customers. This applies both to press hardened and cold formed parts.
