Schuler at EuroBLECH 2014: New forming technologies and innovative solutions for raising energy efficiency


From October 21 to 25, 2014, Schuler will be showcasing new processes and technologies for the entire spectrum of metal forming at EuroBLECH in Hanover, Germany – the world’s largest trade fair for the sheet metal forming industry. Visitors to the company’s stand (D40 in Hall 27) will get the chance to see a 200-metric-tonne automatic blanking press for the parts supplier industry featuring a new drive technology. Schuler will also be displaying lightweight exhibits, such as carbon parts for the BMW i3, hydro forming and hot stamping parts, as well as other car body components made from high-strength steels and aluminium which were produced on equipment supplied by the press manufacturer.

With the B 5000-NC welding system, Otto Bihler Maschinenfabrik offers operators in the field of progressive technology new perspectives for their production. The B 5000-NC allows the implementation of individual movements independent of press stroke and press speed – for example the closing movement of the welding electrode of contact welding equipment. Schuler at EuroBLECH 2014: New forming technologies and innovative solutions for raising energy efficiency

From October 21 to 25, 2014, Schuler will be showcasing new processes and technologies for the entire spectrum of metal forming at the EuroBLECH in Hanover, Germany – the world’s largest trade fair for the sheet metal forming industry. According to Schuler’s CEO Stefan Klebert the main topic at EuroBLECH 2014 is energy efficiency and sustainability. Especially in times of steadily rising energy prices, it is essential that companies take every opportunity to make savings and use energy as efficiently as possible. As the technological leader, Schuler’s customers can rightly expect from them to set the pace in this field, continues Stefan Klebert.

Schuler will be presenting several innovative solutions for raising energy efficiency at EuroBLECH 2014. The technology and global market leader – celebrating its 175th anniversary this year – has significantly reduced the energy consumption of its presses and automation systems. Up to eight presentations a day will be held on this and other topics at the Schuler Forum on the company’s fair stand.

According to CTO Joachim Beyer Schuler’s ServoDirect Technology not only offers greater productivity and flexibility, but also enhances the machine’s energy efficiency. There are very few mechanical lines leaving the company these days which are not equipped with this technology. Schuler will therefore continue to gradually roll out the ServoDirect Technology across the entire product range, says Joachim Beyer. The company’s TwinServo Technology has also been well received on the market: Schuler already received numerous orders for this more compact and rigid press design.

Schuler Service offers a range of tailored solutions over a machine’s entire lifetime – helping improve energy efficiency and output performance, as well as ensuring higher machine availability. With its rich history and 300,000-plus press lines delivered around the world, Schuler can draw on a wealth of experience in the sector.

However, Schuler’s machines themselves not only save energy: the lightweight parts they produce also play an important role in reducing vehicle weight – and thus consumption. Whether carbon-fibre reinforced plastics, high-strength steels or aluminium: Schuler supplies forming processes for all these lightweight materials – from cold forging to hot stamping to hydro-forming and plastics forming.

According to Joachim Beyer Schuler needs to identify trends in forming technology well in advance and provide the right solutions. After all, the machines are used to create products which will not come on to the market until much later, says Joachim Beyer.

With the B 5000-NC welding system, Otto Bihler Maschinenfabrik offers operators in the field of progressive technology new perspectives for their production.

The B 5000-NC allows the implementation of individual movements independent of press stroke and press speed – for example the closing movement of the welding electrode of contact welding equipment. This means operators will achieve faster processing speeds, simplify peripheral equipment and increase production quality. In addition, processes can be moved outside of the confined space of the press with the B 5000-NC, leading to a reduced tool length and saving valuable space.

The B 5000-NC combines the strengths of two powerful systems: on the one hand, the proven B 5000 welding control system for optimum adaptation, adjustment and monitoring of the welding performance of a large variety of tasks, and on the other hand the highly flexible VariControl VC 1 machine and process control system. This provides maximum freedom when programming NC axes, such as for welding gripper operations, forming movements or material feeds.

With the use of NC controllers for contact welding equipment, the curve profiles can be easily programmed in the control platform. Thus, their use is no longer dependent on an external drive, but can be operated "stand-alone" – either synchronously to the main system using an encoder system or asynchronously. Only a signal is required to start the profile, and the cycle time always corresponds to the programmed movement. This means the entire welding cycle sequence is always the same regardless of the speed of the main system. The B 5000- NC standard system is designed for the simultaneous operation of up to two welding positions. With the expansion pack (additional control cabinets) a maximum of 8 welding inverters (up to 250 kVA) is possible. The system can be upgraded indefinitely with additional NC control systems and process modules.

With the B 5000-NC, operators avoid interface problems, reduce effort, time and cost for planning automation tasks and benefit from faster commissioning and reliable service. Bihler offers a complete welding solution from a single source – from flexible contact welding equipment with speeds of up to 600 welds per minute to the powerful transformers. The modular concept allows operators to make changes at any time as well as integrate individual extensions. This means operators can react flexibly to new processing tasks and keep their investment costs manageable. Our broad portfolio of Bihler high-performance process modules includes all applications of manufacturing and assembly technology in the field of sheet metal forming.

Keep it short – KMT develops mini cutting head for use in applications with multiple axes

Considering 5-Axes Waterjet Cutting Systems, the space for the cutting head often is quite limited. KMT Waterjet Systems now offer a solution for such constricted installation locations: a compact and flexibly applicable valve assembly for cutting heads.

In cooperation with a customer, KMT designed a mini cutting head for application in waterjet cutting systems with multiple axes, which are necessary to realize angular and cone-shaped cuts. Besides this, the new development is a perfect fit for any kind of application with limited space for the installation of the cutting head. The company could achieve the compact dimensions due to the construction of an extra small pneumatic valve consisting of a mini actuator and a valve body. The outlet is a specifically developed nozzle tube which is mounted at a 90° angle to the actuator. Thus, the complete assembly group measures only 15 cm (about 6”) from the cover of the N/C actuator to the retaining nut of the valve body with an installation height including the high pressure connection of less than 10 cm (about 4”).

The valve assembly can be used in waterjet cutting systems which operate at a maximum pressure of 4,100 bar as well as in systems with a pressure range of up to 6,200 bar. And it proves to be quite flexible: Any component with a ¾” connection can be mounted to the nozzle tube. Of course, the assembly group is compatible with other KMT high pressure components and can thus be easily integrated into an existing system. For the pressure range of up to of 4.100 bar, KMT recommends the installation of an ACTIVE IDE II cutting head; for applications which run at a maximum of 6,200 bar, the model types ACTIVE AUTOLINE PRO or ACTIVE IDE PRO are the components of choice.

Schwarze-Robitec: Machines for all Bending Cases

Schwarze-Robitec will be showing its latest solutions for the forming of plates and sections at the EuroBLECH in Hall 11 Booth C06.
In the focus are the two new bending machine series Platebender PB for plates and Sectionbender SB for sections. The bending specialist will also be presenting the new control of its tube bending machines and the TorqueFormer. This forms sections with complex isometrics torsion superimposed and three-dimensional.

The new plate bending machine series PB: Depending on the desired version, these process plates with a material thickness of only a few millimeters all the way to 125 millimetres. They are equipped optionally with three or four rollers. The number of rollers on the new section bending machine series SB is also variable. In their standard equipment the machines already have eleven axes and therefore create a larger bandwidth of bending contours. As the SB machines process both flat or angle irons as well as T-, I-, C- and special sections in the most varied formats and dimensions, the technology is used in the most diverse sectors of industry. Thanks to the large bending moment, the SB series also forms particularly difficult sections with the greatest of ease. With the patented TorqueFormer the company will present a further new development: It forms sections with complex isometrics torsion superimposed and three dimensional.

The novel technology offers the advantages of the optimized bending kinematics of cold bending and thus enables flexible manufacture of complex topologies with higher dimensional and contouring accuracy.

The new control for tube bending machines from Schwarze-Robitec reduces non-productive times to a minimum. The bending machine manufacturer has broken down the original sequence of the bending process and arranged the individual steps synchronously. While, for example, the tube is being fed to the tool, the clamping functions close almost fully. This means that the tool is immediately ready for the next bending step when the tube reaches its target position. Interested parties can obtain detailed information about the extended product and service range from Schwarze-Robitec at EuroBLECH at Booth C06 in Hall 11.

Transfluid: Cut tubes efficiently and without chips

Even a single special process may sometimes be the key to effective complete solutions to production processes. In this respect for instance, chipless tube cutting allows direct further processing of the tube. In the consistent further development of its “t cut” tube cutting technologies, transfluid focuses on two aspects, including also chipless cutting of thick-walled pipes.

Because contamination may pose major problems to the series production of a variety of tubes. In the worst case, the chips appear again when the tubes are already installed in the system. If you get off easily in such an event, the chips only cause faults. In worse case, the destruction of entire system components may result. According to Gerd Nöker, Managing Director of transfluid Maschinenbau GmbH this makes the advantages of chipless cutting processes completely clear. And an additional advantage to chipless cutting is that it can be deployed in a wide range of equipment variants to meet individual requirements.

When the tube is cut from the coil, it is precisely aligned, checked for damages and fed to the orbital cutting unit. Here you either work with two coils that are connected to each other in order to save set-up time, or you use the unit‘s feeding assistance system which mounts in a new coil quickly and securely.

During the cutting process the tube rods are fed via a magazine and separation unit. To save additional material, our unit also offers an optional cut optimisation system. This system ensures that, for instance, a 6-meter long rod is ideally cut lengths without a resudial length. The cutting material is positioned by a gripper feeder which has a servo-electric drive. The cutting tolerances are +/-0.1 mm for a one meter feed.

The cutting process itself is performed by an orbital cutting knife. The big advantage of the plant is that this cutting knife is mechanically forwarded in a controlled manner. In this way we can optimally adjust the cutting process to precisely suit the wall thickness of the material being cut. The cut area is intentionally opened during the cutting process. This ensures that the cutting rollers do not jam in the gap of the cut. The tube is separated at the precise moment when the optimal cutting depth is reached. This guarantees that pipe constriction is kept to a minimum. In addition, a special mechanism guarantees that the pipes are continuously calibrated on the exterior. Of course we use knives in our units, which are optimally adjusted to the respective materials. This ensures that the cutting knives have a long service life. Cutting outputs of 100.000 - 200.000 cuts are possible even with welded pipes. The cutting time is from 2 to 3 seconds depending on the pipe length.

Standard cutting can be realized within the parameter range 6 - 30 x 3 mm (stainless steel). Specially equipped, our technology can also cut significantly smaller pipes. A different size machine cuts tubes to an outer diameter of 76 mm. The shortest cutting length with pull apart is approximately 30 mm, without the pull-apart procedure it is approximately 10 mm. The machine runs at the best cycle times with cut lengths between 55 mm and 1,000 mm. After the cutting process the cut pipes can be discharged as needed. There are up to 10 stations available for this purpose. The different lengths are deposited there. The extremely high output of our cutting machines makes this necessary. This system allows several subsequent processing steps to be serviced. A special software program controls the cut optimisation system, ensures minimal scrap and thus saves material.

Increased efficiency in plasma cutting: Power Automation and IHT Automation collaborate on new lean and flexible customer orientated solutions

Reduced hardware, lower costs, and higher quality: For those customers who require automated plasma cutting solution from a single supplier, Power Automation (PA) and IHT have combined a CNC control package with a matching height control system. This highly efficient solution which is already being used by one customer will be presented to a wider audience at the EuroBLECH exhibition in Hanover from 21 to 25 October 2014.

According to Power Automation Managing Director Jan Hilpert the collaboration with IHT has enabled PA to rapidly have available an affordable packaged plasma cutting solution for their customers. Furthermore, machine manufacturers will benefit from a very cost effective combination, which is also simpler and therefore more easily adjusted, overall a better cutting system than has been available until now.

Kurt Nachbargauer, Managing Director of IHT Automation from Baden-Baden sees great potential for the control package jointly developed with PA. Especially for clients who want an out of the box automation system or need to get a new machine to the market quickly, the packaged offer is highly attractive, says Kurt Nachbargauer.

The combination has been designed to cost the customer less than if he had used individual components. PA and IHT have worked together to ensure that the system is highly flexible, easy to configure and to be compatible with all plasma sources available on the market. The precision, speed, reliability and high quality of the package set new standards. This is proved in practice by a customer in Turkey who is already using the new control system.

The new jointly developed control package will officially be launched at the EuroBLECH 2014 exhibition in Hanover from October 21 to 25 on the stands of Power Automation (Hall 11, Stand G63) and IHT Automation (Hall 13, Stand E37).

Hypertherm introduces HyPrecision Waterjet, a complete line of waterjet products with Advanced Intensifier Technology

Hypertherm, a manufacturer of advanced plasma, laser, and waterjet cutting systems, today announced the introduction of HyPrecision Waterjet, a complete line of waterjet products. These products include pumps ranging from 15 to 150 horsepower, precision cutting heads, and abrasive delivery equipment. Today’s announcement is the result of Hypertherm’s acquisition of AccuStream, whose background and expertise in waterjet cutting started in the mid 1980's with the development, application and sale of waterjet products.

The systems feature Advanced Intensifier Technology to extend maintenance intervals, reduce maintenance time and maximize performance. Hypertherm estimates the total cost of ownership for a HyPrecision system is up to 20 percent less than competitive systems, resulting in increased profitability for customers.

Sara Mancell, Hypertherm’s waterjet marketing manager explains that the inventor of HyPrecision waterjet ran his own job shop for many years seeing firsthand what could and did go wrong with the systems he was using. That, combined with more than a decade of experience designing waterjet equipment, drove him to develop replacement parts for a variety of systems. The knowledge gained selling those parts provided an opportunity to learn where and why failures occurred. These experiences led him to create his own waterjet system and continually refine and improve it through the years, says Sara Mancell.

Examples of the practical engineering found only in HyPrecision waterjet pumps include the optimized plunger length and diameter, combined with long bearing engagement for better alignment, resulting in maximum component life with minimum pressure fluctuation and placement of hydraulic rod seals and plunger bearings outside the hydraulic end cap for easier access and servicing. The addition of an advanced piston design minimizes seal wear and greatly extends part life.

Hypertherm HyPrecision Waterjet systems are part of Hypertherm’s Built for Business Integrated Cutting Solutions in which Hypertherm’s ProNest nesting software, computer numeric controller (CNC), THC, and HyPrecision Waterjet work together to automatically apply the right cutting parameters and adjust things like the feed rate, abrasive flow rate, pump pressure and more.
