transfluid Maschinenbau GmbH: Processing of high-strength material pipes possible for the first time

The step-by-step shaping of a tube end or a tube has been made possible by the newly developed procedure for processing high-strength and ultra-high-strength materials. This revolutionises manufacturing, particularly in industrial applications where the requirements are set ever higher. And, straight tubes are formed into increasingly extreme shapes.

Incremental tube shaping can be used for weight reduction purposes in the automotive industry, for example. A wide variety of products, manufactured with this new type of process, can be exposed to heavier loads and are lighter. This is a decisive technical advantage for the future in a fiercely competitive global market. The new development also scores with respect to resource efficiency. Significant quantities of material are saved.

The worldwide innovation of incremental tube forming has arisen from intensive cooperation between transfluid Maschinenbau GmbH and the institute for forming technologies and lightweight construction at Dortmund's technical university.

According to Gerd Nöker, managing director of transfluid, conventional forming processes are over-taxed with the majority of high-strength materials. The machine can partially shape tube made of such materials, in order to prepare them for the next process, continues Gerd Nöker. For example Hydroforming could be such a subsequent process. For this, a tube is pre-formed with different diameters and different wall thicknesses by means of the incremental shaping forming. Particularly important for Hydroforming: There is no change in wall thickness in the locally reduced tube area.

In addition the rolling process also allows a defined manipulation of the surface. In certain circumstances, even the material characteristics are improved. The tube forming machine from transfluid is equipped with a simple bending device. The shaped tube is then very simply bent with this, with very little force being required. The rotatory shaping brings the material to the plasticising zone. Thus tubes can be simultaneously bent with relatively tight radii without mandrels. Because the tube springback is only minimal due to the plasticised material, the bending angle achieved is almost identical to the selected angle of the bending machine.

With their new incremental tube forming technology, transfluid offers the option to process such custom manufactured tubes (tailored tubes) up to a diameter of 90 mm. The solution for tubes thus opens up new dimensions in tube processing whilst simultaneously driving the progress of product design further forwards. So, we can be excited about the future.

SPI GmbH provides new versions of their SheetMetal Solutions at EuroBLECH 2014

SPI software solutions are defined to be interfaces between design and work preparation in the process chain and move even closer to the manufacturing process nowadays. The Focus is on the creation of precise processing, calculating, depending on the engines, according to the used tools and the methods used.

The tool-based approach delivers a 100% optimum ready-to-manufacture unfolding, taking into account the real production radii that are resulting from the parameters of the bending process. Of course the required corner clipping is adjusted to the real bending radii. Because the SPI software is not critical which bend radius is used in the design, it is in principle possible to design without radii. Even the user gets a usable part from such a construction. If the designer wishes to see the resulting radii on the model, this is now made possible with the new version shown at EuroBLECH 2014 for the first time.

Users of the SPI sheet metal software include both manufacturers and contract manufacturers. The efficient method that SPI supports makes also "batch size 1" economical. The customer is able to handle his own constructions but also imported models. SPI SheetMetal compensates inaccuracies in the construction of imported parts through adjustable tolerance options, which relate among others to the plate's thickness, the parallelism of top and bottom and the angles, where adjacent areas may collide.

New opportunities for various process-related parameters, such as the offset attribute that defines areas of displacement, the corner slot attributes, which allow overlaps, facet attributes, and more, comfortable processing parameters are visible to the this year's EuroBLECH fair for the first time.

It does not matter, which radius was created by the designer, or which radius is found within an imported part. The result can be passed directly to NC programs. For example, in the Tops GEO format. Created GEO files can be loaded directly in the individual modules (punching, laser etc.) onTruTops laser and TruTops punch. For TruTops bend all information (bending radii, bending factors) are included. Also for further processing on bending machines with NC control-systems from Delem and Cybelec the unfolding provides the required additional information. Furthermore, the CAM environment of WiCAM is supported through a special interface.

For the handling of components (parts or assemblies, transitions and connections) a library of over 40 ready pattern parts is available. Combinations of e.g. round, square and rounded transitions can be freely selected in a clearly arranged dialog boxes and are automatically created as bendable parts after setting of the mass. The SPI component library also helps the user to prepare own designs and places them as templates in the library for later re-use.

If the rich functionality of the sheet metal software for certain customers does not cover complete individual needs, SPI GmbH, as a software development company, is well positioned to take over order programming.

Tuberías Procarsa orders a complete pipe mill from Schuler

Within only a few months, Schuler has received its second major order for delivery of a spiral pipe machine. This is from one of the leading manufacturers of steel pipes in Latin America: Tuberías Procarsa, a subsidiary of Industrias CH S.A.B. de C.V., with its headquarters in Monclova, Coahuila, Mexico. As recently as last May, Group Five Pipe Saudi Ltd. placed a major order for an almost identical mill.

Tuberías Procarsa will use the offline spiral pipe machine from Schuler to produce large pipes with diameters from 508 to 2,235 millimetres (20 to 88 inches) and lengths from 12 to 24.4 meters. They will be mainly used for building pipelines in oil and gas extraction. The input stock for the larger pipes is a coil-wound strip up to 25.4 millimetres (1 inch) thick comprising high-grade steel (up to X100); the spiral pipe machine forms this material into the required pipe diameter and connects the edges by tack welding. Following that, welding of the pipe is completed on a separate welding stand using the submerged-arc method.

The pipe mill has a length of more than 450 meters and also includes various facilities for testing the large pipes according to API standards. Ultrasound, X-rays and pressurized water are used for this process. The mill from Schuler will increase Tuberías Procarsa's production capacities by 220,000 tonnes per year.

Bihler: BIMERIC SP servo production system

With the BIMERIC SP servo production system Bihler presents users with new perspectives in the progressive manufacture of assemblies.

The unique machine combination of SP 500 servo press and BIMERIC platform now offers significant advantages compared to sequential production processes. The stamping and forming parts produced in the SP 500 servo press (nominal force 500 kN) in progressive dies are further processed by the BIMERIC platform directly on the carrier strip and assembled to finished assemblies without any intermediate logistical operations. Processes such as contact welding, thread forming, adding screws, etc. can simply be outsourced from the press. The continuous component handling streamlines and simplifies the process chain, ensures a consistently high quality of manufactured components and saves logistics costs as well as downstream machinery. The BIMERIC SP can cover a large variety of assemblies in small and medium lot sizes efficiently with minimal set-up effort.

With the freely programmable stroke (15 mm – 63 mm) and stroke position (0 – 60 mm) adjustment user can integrate existing or new follow-on tools in the SP 500 flexibly. For programming, only three values are required: Stroke length, feed and opening value at bottom dead centre. These values are stored in the tool program and are set automatically when changing tools. The direct drive via a highly dynamic torque motor is ideally designed for flexible movements during the forming process. The SP 500 servo press is expandable to up to 76 movements. Motions can be implemented from all directions. Tool change systems allow for extremely short changeover times.

Various sensor systems are integrated for maximum operating safety. A dynamic retraction depth control ensures a safe punching process. It regulates the position of bottom dead centre during operation across the entire speed range (max. 400 1/min.).

Continuous measurement of values such as temperature, force, path and vibration and their comparison with stored thresholds and limiting curves prevent damage occurring to press and tools.

Besides the SP 500, the BIMERIC can also be coupled with the servo press SP 800. This press offers a nominal force of 800 kN with a speed range of up to 200 1/min. The SP 800 has a fixed stroke with 30 mm and a stroke position adjustment of -8 mm from BDC. Strip material up to a width of 160 mm can be processed on this servo press (SP 500: max. 250 mm).

The full range of functions of the Bihler VariControl VC 1 machine and process control system ensures a comfortable and reliable operation. Changeover procedures are completed by the press of a button on the customized menu and are 100% reproducible. All machine functions as well as the number of axes and axis movements are configured without external programming devices directly on the controller. The bASSIST multimedia diagnostic and online help system supports your operators with videos, graphics, etc. (including customized items) and allows you to easily optimize processes.

TRUMPF: Combined punching and laser processing rises to a new class

Numerous world premieres and many innovations along the entire process chain will be on exhibit in the TRUMPF booth at EuroBLECH 2014. Appearing in almost every product sector are innovations for economical and profitable laser cutting, welding and marking, along with punching and bending – more than ever before unveiled at a trade show. Not only will visitors see a trend-setting design and programming software.

Also on display is the new generation in the TruBend Series 5000 and—with the semi-automated TruBend Center—a completely new member of the TRUMPF press brake line. Also celebrating its premiere will be the TruPunch 5000, which has again raised productivity and reliability standards in punching. The TruMark 5050, thanks to higher mean laser power, can mark products even faster and still in outstanding quality. Numerous innovations also make the TruLaser 2D laser cutting machines a highlight. Also new is the TruMatic 6000 fibre, a combined punch laser machine.

The TruMatic 6000 fibre joins the advantages of the solid-state laser with high quality punching technology, making it a productive punch laser machine when working thin sheet metal. It uses the high cutting speeds possible with the TruDisk 3001 and combines its 180 kilonewtons of punching force, at 1,000 strokes per minute, with highly dynamic drives. With these high performance values and a rugged machine concept, proven in many years of service, the TruMatic 6000 fibre sets new benchmarks in productivity and process reliability. It rapidly cuts, punches and shapes sheet metal up to 6.4 millimetres thick. When engraving, it marks parts at superb productivity, with 2,800 strokes per minute.

When considering the productivity, the strengths of the solid-state laser come to bear especially in galvanized mild steel and film-covered stainless steel. In this application area the advancing speeds are as much as six times those of a CO2 laser of the same power. That the quality is excellent goes without saying. The descending die, a laser guard with its own NC axis, and part removal flaps equipped with brushes ensure gentle processing of the materials and high parts quality. To ensure that delicate curves and tight radii are cut with superior quality at both edges and corners, the machine is also equipped with a sophisticated laser output control system. The solid-state laser brings about additional advantages. It expands the range of materials that the TruMatic 6000 fibre can work. This means that not only mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium can be processed, but non-ferrous metals like copper and brass, as well. Thanks to nitrogen cutting technology, the best edge quality and dimensional accuracy can be achieved in non-ferrous metals with minimum thermal warping. The unique design of the TruDisk makes for reliable operations, undisturbed by back-reflections. In this way the TruMatic 6000 fibre has also set new milestones in quality and flexibility.

Guided by the laser light cable, the beam is directed to the point where it is needed. This might be the cutting head at the TruMatic 6000 fibre, a welding cell or another TRUMPF machine that uses the laser as a tool. This is made possible by the so-called LaserNetwork. Here, multiple machines can share the TruDisk 3001 and thus optimize laser use. This concept is especially attractive to companies that are making their entry into laser welding. The laser also uses minimal energy thanks to its high efficiency level.
