Institut für Umformtechnik, Universität Stuttgart
Stuttgart, Germany

Hall 11, Stand B08

The Institute for Metal Forming Technology (IFU) was established in the winter semester 1958/59 and since then has been one of the production engineering institutes at the University of Stuttgart. Over the years, numerous research projects and development work in the fields of sheet and bulk metal forming as well as the development of new forming processes have been carried out in the laboratories and facilities of the institute. In recent decades, a large part of these research and development projects have resulted in numerous dissertations which have further advanced various major developments in these fields in Germany, in Europe or even at world level and which today belong to the "state of the art" in forming technology.

Products & Services

When working with industrial companies, targeted key areas of the Institute’s research are transferring findings into industrial practice, and exchanging new experiences and new technological developments with regard to process technology on a precompetitive basis. This cooperation between the Institute and interested companies usually occurs based on a previously identified common need for research and development with regard to a specific selection of topics. Therefore, these projects usually are characterised by a strong relevance to practical application in the members’ companies and often result from current tendencies of the metal forming market with regard to components which are produced using metal forming or due to new materials which are still in the process of being introduced into the market. The cooperation itself is regulated by contracts that control the confidentiality, as well as all rights of use of the achieved results and strategies for putting the results into practice.
