Sustainable solutions for the optimized use of material properties and new material functions
The Fraunhofer IWM is a research and development partner for industry and public contracting bodies concerning the topics of component and systems reliability, safety, durability and functionality. The Fraunhofer IWM’s »mechanics of materials« approach is used to identify weaknesses and defects in materials and components, determine their causes and develop solutions that lead to the safer use of components as well as the development of functional materials and resource efficient manufacturing processes.

Comprehensive forming process services via our diverse combination of experimentation, testing methodologies, many years’ experience in numerical simulation and expertise in material modeling:
- Mechanical and thermo-physical characterization of sheet metal
- Generation of material data cards as input for simulation of forming processes
- Simulation of forming processes
- Influence of orientation dependent material properties (anisotropy) on forming processes
- Further sheet metal forming related topics like tribology, joining, fatigue or crash
We find and clarify the physical reasons for weak points in manufacturing processes, thus enabling our clients to avoid problems in initial design phases. By identifying optimization potential in a given production process, we provide our clients the means to more accurately produce components while reducing faulty parts. Through our "Virtual Lab" we link the microstructures in materials with macroscopic material properties in order to simulate property changes during processing.
